Area Information

Richland Center was settled in 1840 on the Pine River by trappers canoeing up the Wisconsin River. It became the county seat in 1851. By 1880 the population was 1,227 and the growing town boasted stores, churches and a new school.

World famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, was born here in 1867. He returned here in 1915 to build the unique Mayan-influenced A.D. German Warehouse.

Other points of historical interest include a 1909 railroad depot that has been renovated as our visitor center. You can also check out the family genealogy center at the Brewer Library's Richland County history room or visit the Flag Park, a patriotic landmark in Wisconsin's designated Purple Heart City. There's also the first municipal auditorium built in the state, the Masonic building, the Richland County Bank building and numerous downtown historic preservations and lovingly restored local homes.

Average temperatures in the area are 21 degrees  in winter, 45 in spring, 70 in summer and 49 in fall. Precipitation averages are 3.47 inches in winter, 8.01 in spring, 11 in summer and 8.55 in fall, for a yearly total of 31 inches.

Richland Center is a unique small town offering excellent shops, stores, restaurants and other amenities. Numerous service clubs, an indoor swimming pool and recreation center, an outdoor pool, many parks and a golf course are some of the excellent facilities and activities available.

Ample medical and health care is provided by a hospital with 24 hour emergency service, a clinic, medical flights and weekly visits by specialists from our sister hospital in Madison.

The American College Test (ACT), which rates college-bound high school students, ranks Wisconsin well above the national average in education, placing the state firmly in the Number One position. The Richland County school system offers 6 public and 3 parochial elementary schools, a middle school, high school and special education. A 2-year campus of the University of Wisconsin is in the area. Vocational training is also available.

Richland County has an abundance of underground water. Natural springs are numerous and are the sources of many of the county's streams. The wells and springs provide hard water. Wisconsin ranked Number One in a recent survey among the states in its efforts in promoting clean water, effective land-use planning, highway safety and energy-related pollution control, both indoors and outdoors, providing spectacular views.

The county is mostly agricultural. Farms dot the countryside where an original homestead consisted of 160 acres. Primary crops are forage grains such as corn and alfalfa to provide feed for livestock. Also of economic importance are soybeans, tobacco, wheat, rye, barley, potatoes, berries, maple syrup and honey. Fruit trees also are evident, with four commercial orchards in the immediate area.

Industries are of the small, clean type with varied products that include electric motors, yogurt, ice cream novelties, organic baked goods, satellite dishes and components, fractional hp motors, lingerie, iron castings, piston sleeves, and of course Wisconsin's own famous cheese.

In Richland County alone there are 41 fishing streams teeming with rainbow and native brown trout. The Wisconsin River and the 100-mile Kickapoo River offer some of the most scenic canoeing in the nation. Snowmobiling is popular during the winter and there's excellent hunting with an abundance of white-tail deer, wild turkey, bobwhite quail, gray and fox squirrel, red and gray fox, raccoon, ruffed grouse and rabbits.

Our sports-oriented community offers everything from bird watching to bowling to racquetball. The quality of our rural lifestyle seems to attract people from all walks of life.

Richland Center has all the ingredients of progressive, fun-filled living and outdoor sports enjoyment. We of United Country Real Estate invite you to inspect our amenities and lifestyle.
